Ghana’s Virgil Abloh Becomes Louis Vuitton’s First Black Artistic Director

Ghanian-American designer Virgil Abloh Joins Louis Vuitton as Its New Menswear Designer

Virgil Abloh who was the art director for the 2011 Jay-Z / Kanye West album Watch the Throne, for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package and also the founder of Off-White label replaced Kim Jones, who left Vuitton in January to become the menswear designer for Christian Dior.

This makes him the first black artistic director at the NewYork- Paris based fashion house. He had this to say;

“This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams,”

“And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.” Virgil added

Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke Monday had this to say about Virgil’s appointment;

“innate creativity and disruptive approach (that) have made him so relevant, not just in the world of fashion but in popular culture today.”

He will debut his first collection for Vuitton in June at men’s fashion week in June 2018.
